Also known as the “Temporary Business (Long Stay) – Standard Business Sponsorship Subclass 457,” the 457 Visa Australia is the most widely used plan used by both Australian and overseas employers to enlist and recruit skilled workers from overseas to Work in Australia on a temporary basis. Find out if this visa is right for your particular case.

Advantages of the 457 visa Australia

Holders of the 457 visa Australia are allowed to work in the country for a maximum of four (4) years. Using this visa, you will also be allowed to bring eligible family members and/or same-sex partner. You are allowed to travel in and out the country unlimitedly.

The 457 visa Australia can also lead you to permanent residency status and eventually to citizenship. Recent statistics indicate an increase in permanent residence visa grants to 457 visa holders.

Requirements to secure 457 visa Australia

  1. The sponsoring employer must be an “eligible employer” as approved by the Australian government.
  2. You as an employee must pass the qualification / assessment point system, the English language skill assessment, health requirements, and character requirements. NOTE: Your prospective sponsor-employer nominates you for the position they require, but the Department of Immigration and Citizenship is the final body to review your application and determine if you are eligible.
  3. The sponsoring employer must ensure that as a 457 visa Australia holder, your base pay is NOT below the prescribed salary levels:
  • For employees with English language exemption – $81,040
  • For employees in the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) sector who secured their 457 visa Australia via regional employment arrangement – $55,725
  • For all other employees in the ICT sector – $61,920
  • For all other employees who secured their 457 visa Australia via regional employment arrangement -  $40,705
  • For all other 457 visa Australia holders – $45 220

These transitional arrangements provide safety nets that oblige employer-sponsors to pay the minimum level (at least) for the current visa period to employees with salary rates are lower than the current minimum.

Important notes

  • Should you wish to transfer to another employer-sponsor, you need to obtain a new 457 visa Australia. The work conditions on your current visa will not permit you to switch to another occupation or to another employer-sponsor without authority from the Department of Immigration. Your new (prospective) employer must become an “approved sponsor” and the new occupation or position must be classified as “skilled.” Contact the Department of Immigration if you have plans of switching to a new employer, or if you have already transferred without permission.
  • If your original employer terminates your contract earlier than the end-validity of your 457 visa Australia, you need to leave Australia as soon as possible. Should you wish to continue working in the country, you need another employer-sponsor, and you need to reapply for a visa immediately to avoid problems. If you do not have a new employer or if your new employer does not meet the sponsorship requirements set by the Department of Immigration, your visa may be canceled. You will have to leave Australia without delay.
  • Do not commence work for any new employer until the Department sends you a written authority allowing you to start.
