Australian Work Visa: Everything You Need to Know

There are different kinds of Australian work visas. Factors such as your nationality, age, and skills determine whether or not you are qualified.

Working Holiday Visa (Subtype 417)

The easiest type of visa to acquire is the Australian “working holiday visa”, which allows certain travellers to work in Australia on a casual or temporary basis in order to supplement the costs of their holiday in the country. To qualify, you need to be between 18 to 30 years and be citizen of any of the following countries, which have signed a cultural exchange arrangement with the Australian government:

• Ireland
• Italy
• Japan
• Korea
• Malta
• Netherlands
• Norway

*If you are between 18 to 30 years old, have tertiary education, and are from the US, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Iran, or Chile, you may qualify for a slightly different Australian work visa under subclass 462.

Employer Sponsored Worker Visa

Skilled workers who have been offered jobs by lawfully operating Australian and overseas employers may qualify for this type of Australian work visa.

There are two types of Employer Sponsored Worker Visas: temporary and permanent.

Temporary visas are issued to service sellers, standard business-sponsored individuals, medical practitioners (particularly doctors for rural areas), and individuals under temporary labour agreements.

Permanent visas, on the other hand, may be issued to individuals recruited via the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS), the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS), or under permanent labour agreements.

Working Visas for Business People

Business people may apply for an Australian work visa to facilitate short business visits, manage or establish a business in Australia, or to invest in Australia. There are three types:

Business Visit Visa – This type of visa is for business people who need to go to Australia for conferences, training sessions, meetings, negotiations, or explorations with Australia-based organizations

Provisional Business Development Visa -  Also known as “Business Skills” visas, these are designed for business people who want to start, manage, or invest on a business in Australia. It may lead to a permanent residence visa.

Permanent Business Development Visa – These are issued to businessmen who have established the required level of business in Australia using a provisional business development visa. High-calibre businessmen may be issued “direct permanent” visas without having to go through the provisional stage.

Working Visas for Doctors and Nurses

Because of the shortage of regional/rural nurses and doctors in Australia, the government issues an Australian work visa to individuals with primary medical qualifications from other countries, or to individuals who have gained their medical qualifications in an Australian institution but are not yet permanent residents.

Regional Employment Working Visa

Australia seeks to attract skilled, young, English speaking migrants to its rural areas for employment. Qualifications vary, but in general, you have to be under 45 years of age, satisfy the educational requirements specific to the job, have relevant work experience, and have functional English skills in order to qualify for an Australian work visa under the Regional Employment program.

Whether you can obtain a visa online depends on the type of visa you need and your citizenship. In many cases, a paper application is required.
