If you want to study in Australia, you need to have a student visa that you can get upon satisfying the Australian visa requirements. Aside from that, you need to comply with the different conditions of the visa regarding your academic performance and attendance once you commence your study program. Subclasses of the student visa

An Australian student visa has seven (7) subclasses unique for every education sector. You must fulfill the student Australian visa requirements of the subclass that is suitable to your study plan.

  1. Independent ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) – For international students taking ELICOS as their course. This is not a prerequisite for other courses.
  2. Schools – For international students who are taking a course at a secondary or primary school, including the senior and junior secondary school and a secondary exchange program that should be approved.
  3. Vocational Education and Training – For advanced diploma, diploma, and certificates I, II, III, and IV.
  4. Higher Education – Bachelor’s degree, graduate certificate, associate degree, masters degree, and graduate diploma
  5. Non-award – Covers the bridging, foundation, or courses that won’t lead to earning a diploma, degree, or any other formal award.
  6. Postgraduate research – For a master’s degree that requires research and doctoral degrees.
  7. Defence sponsored or AusAID – Full-time study by Defence or AusAid students that are being sponsored by the Australian Government.

The general requirements for student Australian visa requirements

  • You need to be in good health
  • You need to possess good character if you want to pass the Australian visa requirements
  • You should not have any debts to the Australian government
  • Your health insurance must be acceptable via the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). The same is required for family members accompanying you (if any).
  • If your age is below 18 years, you need to make acceptable arrangements for your general welfare, support and accommodation.

Conditions for a student visa

  • You need to satisfy the course requirements and attendance while maintaining a valid enrollment.
  • You should maintain your OSHC cover during your stay in Australia.
  • You should not seek employment or start working unless you are given the permission.
  • You should leave the country before the expiration date of your visa.
  • You should give your education provider your residential address seven (7) days upon arriving in Australia. You should also remind them of any changes made in your address within seven (7) days.
  • You should stay with the education provider you initially enrolled in for the first six months. If your course is less than 6 months, you should stay for your course’s entire duration.
  • If you are unaccompanied by a guardian or parent and you are under 18 years old, you need to get the written approval from your school before you change your residential address, welfare, and support arrangements in Australia.
  • If you want to change your school, you must inform your current school within seven (7) days upon getting your eCoE.
